The Reliably Green Incredible Hulk Gets Pulled Into A Crimson Tide For '#2'

USA Today Article
Captain America is dead. Spider-Man is single again. And now the Incredible Hulk is turning incredibly red.
Looking to boost sales and generate gamma rays of buzz before this summer's new Hulk movie, due June 13, Marvel Comics is replacing the Green Goliath with a raging red monster in a revamped Hulk #2. It goes on sale Wednesday.
The story line, wrapped in a murder mystery by writer Jeph Loeb and artist Ed McGuinness, centers on the identity of the Red Hulk, who may or may not be Bruce Banner and who is even more savage than the green version. "I wanted to bring a danger back to the book," Loeb says. "The Red Hulk is the kind of Hulk we haven't seen before — a thinking, calculating, brutal weapon-toting kind of Hulk.
"Everything the Green Hulk isn't, the Red Hulk is."
For fans of the Hulk, the new bright crimson version may be a shock. The Hulk was dull gray when he was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1962, but that was changed with the second issue, and he has been reliably emerald for almost half a century.
The Red Hulk is the latest in a series of character-bending changes afflicting many of the comic world's longest-running characters. In April, DC Comics begins a story line ominously titled Batman R.I.P.
"It's the soap opera effect," says Andy Khouri, news editor for the online site Comic Book Resources. "A shake-up excites fans. But the success can only be judged by how well they can pull off the illusion of change."
Will the Red Hulk be such an illusion? Loeb isn't saying, but he does reveal that in Hulk #4, a green Hulk does return to do battle.
"In many ways, the Red Hulk speaks to the worst in us," Loeb says, "so when the Green Hulk comes back, it will remind us of the best in us."
Says Khouri: "I would be surprised if this Red Hulk thing just turns out to be a stunt, because Jeph Loeb does tend to think in big terms."
"I'm in this for the long haul," Loeb says. "There is no other Hulk book."

The Death of Captain America: America's Fallen Son

Details and art for the heart-wrenching five-issue Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America mini-series
After the shocking events of Captain America #25, Steve Rogers, better known to the world as the star-spangled Captain America, lies dead, having been assassinated on the steps of a federal courthouse. Being led to trial for violating the Superhuman Registration Act and engaging in the Civil War that pitted super hero against super hero, Rogers was senselessly taken from a world that he had helped save countless times before.
The ramifications of a loss this huge could only be told in a five part event: Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America. Each chapter will follow different Marvel heroes and chronicle their reactions to this loss, the first two spotlighting Wolverine and the Avengers, both New and Mighty.
Tapped to write all five one-shots of the Fallen Son event is superstar writer Jeph Loeb who will be working with a different all-star artist on each including Leinil Yu, Ed McGuinness, John Romita Jr., David Finch, and John Cassaday.
Loeb recounts the genesis of this event, saying, "When we first started talking about The Death of Captain America and decided to do the Fallen Son story, it was J. Michael Straczynski who had the brilliant idea of breaking the issues into the five stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining,
Depression, and Acceptance."
"Because I unfortunately have had recent experience with this concept (NOTE: In June of 2005 Jeph lost his 17 year old son, Sam, a fledgling comic book writer himself, to cancer), it all fell into place in my head. I'm hoping to tell a compelling story about what happens after someone close to you dies and still have some grand adventure that will also celebrate the LIFE of Captain America. Each of these books tries to match that goal."
For the first chapter of Denial in Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America – Wolverine,
Loeb chose the ornery canuck citing, "He was the best character in the Marvel U to ask the hard question -- Is it true? And in order
to tell that story, I wanted the most
exciting penciler to work on the character in the last ten years -- Leinil Yu. And having seen the pages, it's thrilling. It also guest-stars Daredevil who is a fantastic match on Wolverine's quest."
For the next chapter Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America – Avengers, Loeb says, "The
second chapter, Anger, deals with the enormous frustration over the unfairness of death. It can eat you alive if you let it. And to best tell that story, I wanted the characters Cap was most associated with -- the Avengers."
"In the aftermath of Civil War, Brian Michael Bendis had the inspired idea of splitting the team into two factions – The New Avengers and The Mighty Avengers. By doing this, Anger could be told from two different perspectives. The Mighty Avengers are off on a huge mission, tackling a
problem that arises from the ocean depths that may or may not have to do with Namor, the Sub-Mariner.
And you know how The X-Men have their
annual softball games? Well, the New Avengers
have a similar way of putting the world on hold -- they play poker! Guest-starring the ever loving Blue Eyed Thing."
As for his artistic partner on this second chapter, Loeb says, "To tell a story this huge, I knew I
needed my old SUPERMAN/BATMAN pal who drew stories like this one all the time. In what is
really his first show case project for Marvel since his return, Ed McGuinness just tears the doors off and has illustrated both teams with a kind of gigantic
scale that is matched with small human pathos. He's so good, it's startling!"

Civil War’s Fallout Continues in Marvel’s Captain America #25

Steve Rogers has been fighting the good fight since the 1940s, representing the American ideal as a solo hero, with partners like Bucky and The Falcon, and alongside groups like the Avengers. Now, as Marvel Comics’ Civil War rages to a close, the shield-slinger faces the battle of his life in Captain America #25 (DEC06 2304, $3.99)!
In the aftermath of Civil War, the Marvel Universe begins the slow process of rebuilding. Bringing into sharper focus the role of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes – the Avengers – Iron Man #15 (DEC06 2320, $2.99; ships February 28) and New Avengers #27 (DEC06 2329, $2.99) kick the action into high gear with a startling storyline called “The Initiative.” But the saga truly hits home in Captain America #25, as writer Ed Brubaker, penciller & cover artist Steve Epting and variant cover artist Ed McGuinness reveal the shocking fate of the Star-Spangled Avenger!
The book will ship with two covers in a 50/50 ratio, as illustrated by Epting and McGuinness, adding further heat to this heavily anticipated title.
The 48-page, full-color Captain America #25 is slated to ship March 7.

Onslaught Reborn #1 Sells Out

The biggest and baddest menance to wreck havoc on the Marvel Universe is back and fans couldn't be happier. Onslaught Reborn #1 has sold out at Diamond and writer Jeph Loeb is ecstatic with the response the limited series has received thus far. Marvel has no plans at the moment to go back to press on the issue, but it is being considered.
"This is delightful on so many levels. First off, the fans and retailers who believed in Rob and I and a story that is fun and unpredictable -- we THANK YOU! Secondly, to have my first book coming back to Marvel sell out -- and at a very big number too -- is very sweet."
"And mostly, since a substantial portion of the proceeds from the entire mini-series goes to THE SAM LOEB COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP FUND -- it shows me, once again, that the comic book community CARES. Sam will be gone 18 months to this day -- and I miss him more than anyone can imagine and we work in the imagination business! But, he'd be smiling, not just for the success, but for Rob too who 10 years later has this kind of good fortune. Onslaught ROCKS! And wait until you see the Joe Mad cover for Issue #2!!!"
Seen for the first time, here is Joe Madureira's cover to Onslaught Reborn #2. Plus, another peak at Onslaught Reborn artist Rob Liefeld's cover to issue #3.
Onslaught has returned and his first target: Franklin Richards. After taking on the Fantastic Four, it's time for the rest of the Marvel Universe to feel his wrath. And Onslaught has no plans of stopping there, either.
Be advised, copies of Onslaught Reborn #1 may still be available at the retail level
