Marvel Superheroes Power Up For Nicktoons

Marvel superheroes are working overtime.
Iron Man and Wolverine, each the lead in an upcoming feature film, will be doing double duty in two new Nicktoons Network cartoons, Iron Man: The Animated Series and Wolverine and the X-Men.
The two TV series, which premiere in early 2009, are designed to play off the big-screen popularity of the Marvel comic-book characters. Iron Man, which stars Robert Downey Jr. as a rich inventor transformed by his high-tech armor suit, premieres May 2, while Hugh Jackman's Wolverine returns to the screen next spring in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The new series match up well with Nicktoons' core audience, boys ages 6 to 14, general manager Keith Dawkins says. Boys make up 65% of the audience for the Nickelodeon property. "Our audience loves superheroes and … animation," he says. The Marvel characters also will help raise the profile of the digital cable network, which reaches 50 million homes.
Other big-screen films are spawning TV animation, too. Nicktoons' animated Speed Racer: The Next Generation premieres May 2, a week before the live-action, big-screen Speed Racer. The computer-animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars opens in theaters in August, leading into a new fall cartoon series on Cartoon Network and TNT.
The two Nicktoons-Marvel shows, each consisting of 26 half-hour episodes, will enjoy higher profiles because of the big-screen productions, which include three previous X-Men films. "We're trying to create synergy with the brand by having a continual awareness of different interpretations of the characters in the marketplace," says Eric Rollman of Marvel Studios, which has another animated series, The Spectacular Spider-Man, on the CW's Kids WB lineup.
For Nicktoons, the interpretation translates into a teen Iron Man, a superhero closer in age to the network's young viewers. The X-Men cartoon sees Wolverine thrust into the role of reluctant leader, as the beaten-down heroes must try to prevent a future world ruled by destructive robots. Source

Wolverine and the X-Men Extended Trailer

Foo Fighters Sue Marvel Comics Over X-Men Cartoon
The band alleges that Marvel used “substantial excerpts” of their songs “Best of You” and “Free Me” as the music for the trailer of the new animated series Wolverine and the X-Men. You can watch the trailer here, and it’s pretty obvious that the Foos are used to soundtrack the cartoon’s preview.

WRITER GREG JOHNSON SUMMONS THE MYSTIC ARTS FOR 'DOCTOR STRANGE'

Adapting the written word to the screen either as live action or animation is a pretty thankless job, and never more scrutinized as in the field of comic book adaptations. Comic fans are a group that dissect and devour every detail of a movie project separating out the things that were done correctly (in their opinion) and the things that were completely off the mark.
That’s why iF MAGAZINE was so eager to talk to Greg Johnson, the writer who adapted comic books for the excellent new DOCTOR STRANGE Marvel Comics animated movie THE SORCERER SUPREME. Take a walk on the mystic side with Johnson as he explains updating and re-tooling Strange’s origins and why it’s not cool in the year 2007 to have Wong be a simple manservant. Read Full Story

Sony Ramps Up Spidey Series

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Television have increased their production commitment for the new The Spectacular Spider-Man animated television series from 13 half-hour episodes to 26.
The new series from Culver Entertainment, which follows Spidey's journey as a not-so-typical 16-year-old entering his junior year of high school, will premiere in early 2008 on Kids’ WB! on the CW Network. So far, Kids' WB! has commited to airing 13 episodes.
Spider-Man Merchandising—the limited partnership comprised of Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Consumer Products that oversees licensing and merchandising activities—is currently in discussions with industry leaders in most major product categories as well as retailers.
"The launch of the new Spider-Man animated series is part of an aggressive strategy to continue to meet fans’ nearly insatiable demand for our world renowned webslinger," says Eric Rollman for Spider-Man Merchandising.

Review: 'DOCTOR STRANGE: THE SORCERER SUPREME'

The nice thing about the Marvel Universe is that there is something for virtually everyone. There are all kinds of superheroes, from ordinary people gifted with extraordinary powers to gods, to dark creatures of nighttime’s shadows that now serve the light, and then there are mages and magic users. DOCTOR STRANGE falls into this last category of magic wielding heroes.
Stephen Strange was a prominent and prideful neurosurgeon when a car accident cost him the use of his hands. Driven to find a cure at any cost, Strange paupers himself and only at the end of his rope is he offered hope in the form of The Ancient One, a powerful mystic living in Tibet. Strange enters the tutelage of The Ancient One and learns of the balances between realities that must be maintained by mystics and guardians of the Earth realm. The most powerful of these mystics is the Sorcerer Supreme (the title The Ancient One carries) and Dr. Strange is fated to become this super powerful guardian. In his rise to embrace his own powers Strange is forced to confront Baron Mordo (another student of The Ancient One) and Mordo’s new master The Dread Dormammu. Read Full Review
