  1. My wife brought this home and said she loved it. I, however, must dump on it.

Look, I don’t mind comic-book reimaginings of classic stories. Eric Shanower’s version of “The Wizard of Oz,” as an example, was welcomed in most quarters.

But Austen simply isn’t fitting material for this. There’s very little action. It’s almost all verbal: just a bunch of heads sitting around talking, talking, talking. None of the cool stuff you can do in comics is done here, simply because the material doesn’t call for it. Whose idea was this? Hey, Marvel, why not a comics version of Augustine’s “City of God”?

Plus, it wasn’t my impression from reading Austen’s novel that the five Bennett sisters were a clutch of tawdry trollops. But that’s how they’re drawn here. Frankly, they’ve been rendered like adult film stars. It’s really off-putting.

    Lovely colors, though. Rating: 2 / 5

  2. I always like visual renditions of favorite books so when I saw there was a graphic novel of my all time favorite book ‘Pride and Prejudice’ I bought it immediately. I felt that Nancy Butler did a very good job at taking the essential parts of P&P and putting them in a shorter format for the comic while still keeping the feel of the story as a whole. My only real complaint is the artwork. I’ve never been a big fan of american comics, I much prefer the Japanese manga, so the artwork for this was kind of creepy to me. Nearly every panel had a close up of the characters’ faces that was almost grotesque and when they smiled they made me shiver. I expected them to jump out of the page and eat me. Plus, since this was also a five part series put into one whole book (all five covers are shown in the end as a gallery) the artwork begins to change as you get closer to the end. The dark outline lines become fewer and fewer until there’s hardly any outlining at all and the colors begin to soften and smooth into one another. I found the last fifth of the book the best only because the artwork had become so smoothed out that they characters’ faces weren’t nearly as creepy anymore.

So as a whole, this is a great addtition for any P&P fan but don’t expect it to be the greatest visual rendition. I hope someone does a (good) manga version someday. Anyone up to the challange? Rating: 4 / 5

  3. I wish I could give it a 4.75 stars because I only had problems with some of the graphics. I am a graphics novel fan and old and new comics. The romance started when I was able to read my first comic book a million years ago. So when I saw a graphic novel of my favorite couple ever, I bought it without hesitation. Now, I must disagree with the negative comments about the rendition of the 5 girls. I think Lizzie, Jane, Mary, Kitty and Lydia look as they should have. They look beautiful and sexy, nothing wrong with that. Emotions where clearly disaplayed adding much to the novel. The story line was faithful to the book, and the clothing was typical of the time period. And what a great way to introduce young minds to classics.. I can tell you that this book is also a great learning tool. Just now, while I live overseas, a young German neighbor has been sitting, for hours, reading it while improving her English and actually enjoying the learning experience for the 1st time.

The one complaint, are the rendering of a few of the characters: 1. COL Fitzwilliam. Not sure how old are the graphics artists, but he was around 33 years old, 6 or 7 years older than Darcy. In here he appears in his late 40’s and not dashing at all. 2. Why is the Mrs. Bennet so old looking? She married when she was probably 17 or 18. The oldest girl is Jane, who is 22, that would make her around 40+ years old; In this version of PP she appears around 50 or so. At the same time, Mr. Bennet looks like the grandfather when he was probably in his mid forties. 3. Why does Darcy have so many wrinkles? He was 26 or 27 years and maybe that is old for a 20 year old, but at least I know different; and why is Ann wearing glasses, meaning that if you wear glasses you are a frump?

Besides that I just love this version of PP. I hope there are many more classic graphic novels to come.

    Rating: 4 / 5

  4. Let me start off by saying that I may be freak among girls. I LOVE Pride and Prejudice and I love comic books. This graphic novel was perfect for me and for many other people I am sure.

The story is abridged nicely. The classic lines that we all remembered reading are there. The illustrations are quite lovely. The Bennet sisters are flat out hot in this version. Even Mary is far more attractive than your normal run-of-the-mill gal. There were a few times when I did get confused on which Bennet sister I was actually looking at though. And Bingley’s hair changed from red to blonde every once in awhile. This are all easily forgivable however.

If you are a Pride and Prejudice fan you really should check this graphic novel out. If you havent read the novel and were interested in the story this might be a good jumping off point.

The only question I have is why did it take Marvel so long to think about making this? Younger readers will easily get drawn into more classics if they are presented in this way. Keep on making them! Rating: 5 / 5

  5. This is a beautifully drawn rendition of the classic Pride and Prejudice! I won this online and was very excited! It’s the same story, but in graphic novel form. There are some slight changes, but overall Nancy Butler keeps the same classic lines and I just can’t get enough of the illustrations. I highly recommend it for all you Austen lovers!
