Captain America Vol. 5: Civil War

You pick it up and notice at first that its only got like 4 issues in it 22-24, and wow where the hell is captain america #25 thats a pretty curtial part of story to be missing or are they going to juice 25 bucks more outta people with the captain america civil war directors cut like the did with issue 25.THE ONE WHERE HE GETS KILLED sounds pretty important to me like it should be in the damn book Rating: 2 / 5
UM, NOT GIVE STUFF AWAY,AND I WONT,BUT I HEARD CAP DIES IN THIS SERIES.I GUESS FALLEN SON WILL COVER THAT.I DID THINK AFTER MAIN C/W BOOK THAT HE WOULDN’T DIE YET,BUT I THOUGHT HE WOULD BE ONE OF THE BEST AND MOST IMPORTANT TIE INS.WRONG TWICE.THIS IS AS THE COVER SHOWS,THE WINTER SOLDIER,S.H.E.I.L.D STORY.TOOK A QUICK NIGHT OR TWO TO DRAG THIS THIN BOOK OUT,AND WELL DIDN’T DO ANYTHING MUCH FOR ME.I THINK IT’S MORE OF A POST-CAPTAIN AMRICA BUILD UP.OR MAYBE THATS MY THIRD STRIKE.ALL IN ALL DIDN’T HATE IT BUT MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE GOT XMEN OR PETER PARKER TIE-INS INSTEAD.AT LEAST IT WASN’T AS LONG AS FRONTLINE 1 & 2. Rating: 2 / 5
As the Civil War rages on between the superheroes, Ed Brubaker gives us a look through Captain America’s eyes as he takes a stand against Tony “Iron Man” Stark and his pro-registration supporters. Brubaker spins his most compelling Cap story here as Cap prepares himself for a final stand. What really makes this TPB worth picking up though is the Winter Soldier: Winter Kills one-shot which is included here. James “Bucky” Barnes faces all the chaos he has caused in the midst of Christmas in a surprisingly poignant story that actually may make you think it was a good thing for Brubaker to resurrect Cap’s long dead World War II partner. Well, maybe. Anyway, this TPB is a nice companion to Mark Millar’s main Civil War storyline, and it sets the stage for the much lauded death of the legendary super soldier. Rating: 4 / 5
While the overall Civil War storyline that Marvel was running at the time is pretty deflating, this trade is able to entertain with some really good charcater moments with Sharon Carter, Nick Fury, and Bucky. The art is really good and the Winter Soldier tale is really good. I always enjoy Brubaker’s WWII stories. What holds this trade back besides the Civil War stuff is the size and the fact that not muc happenes wxcept behind the scenes. Overall, just okay. Rating: 3 / 5
While most of the reviews here criticize the book for what it isn’t, I really enjoyed it for what it is. Clearly as a Civil War tie-in, and Captain America is the star of Civil War (Marvel Comics), you won’t find much of Cap in this series. But, if you’re an avid Captain America reader: 1. you should already own Civil War, 2. Cap’s supporting characters have as much to do with his story as he does. So this is more about Agent 13, Falcon, and the Winter Soldier, and as such, still makes a good read with lots of action. And no, the Death of Captain America isn’t here or in Civil War, it’s in the next book, The Death of Captain America, Vol. 1: The Death of the Dream. Finally, most reviewers are right: The Winter Soldier one-shot at the end is the best part, and I hope he gets his own series. Rating: 4 / 5
