Excelsior! Stan Lee Speaks

Stan the Man talks about Civil War and the slate of Marvel movies.
When you think Marvel Comic, you think of Stan Lee and the amazing impact he has had on bringing the Superhero genre to the mainstream. Stan Lee shares his thoughts on the comic book world at large too.
Crave Online: What do you think of the Stan Lee action figure?
Stan Lee: You know, when I spoke to Hasbro about a year ago and they asked me if they could make a figure like that, I swear I thought they were joking. I said, "Sure, why not?" The next thing I knew, I saw and ad. I mean, I can't believe it. Me as an action figure? At least they don't call them dolls anymore. Luckily, somebody came up with the phrase action figure so now guys don't mind buying them.
Crave Online: In your career, is there anything you still want to do?
Stan Lee: Well, I haven't starred in a movie yet. I haven't been threatening Sean Connery's career in any way and I haven't ever written a novel. I thought I would when I was young but then I found out I don't have the patience for it which is why I probably have limited myself to comics because I can write a comic book in one day. The idea of spending week after week working on a novel, I think I'm not geared for that. That's about it.
Crave Online: Do you miss being the Marvel head honcho?
Stan Lee: That was so many years ago, I almost can't remember it. The thing that was most fun about that was the people I worked with because I was lucky enough to work with probably the most talented artists and writers and colorists that the world has ever known. Now out here in Hollywood, I'm also working with tremendously talented people and so I don't think things have changed all that much.

SDCC '07: MARVEL X-MEN PANEL

The end is near - that's not comic book company PR speak for an impending crossover, it's this year's Comic-Con International. Marvel's last presentation at San Diego was X-Men, focusing on, you know, the X-Men line of comics.
Marvel marketing guru Jim McCann welcomed fans to the panel and introduced X-Men group editor Axel Alonso, Uncanny X-Men writer Ed Brubaker, X-Men writer Mike Carey (introduced as "the man who killed Cable"), Marc Guggenheim, New X-Men writers Craig Kyle and Chris Yost, Daniel Way (Wolverine: Origin) and X-Factor writer Peter David.
The first slide and topic of discussion concerned the ongoing "Endangered Species" back-up story. Alonso explained the premise and format of the storyline.
Mike Carey talked about X-Men, with the cover of #204 (with Rogue and Gambit) shown. Carey said, as the cover hints, it'd be the first time Rogue and Gambit met "face to face" in a long time.
You can see that cover and many others in Marvel's October 2007 solicitations...
Brubaker discussed Uncanny X-Men, and how it's been building to Messiah Complex. He talked about the current Morlocks story, saying that they'll be some "really cool Storm moments."

Sam Raimi Talks Spider-Man 4

Sam Raimi has given his strongest indication yet that he may return to the director’s chair for Spider-Man’s fourth outing.
Okay, he hasn’t exactly said he’s definitely up for the job but, as he spoke exclusively to Empire at Comic-Con, he confirmed he isn’t completely averse to the idea.
“I want to help contribute to the production,” he said. “I don’t know if I’ll just be a producer on it but if I can work with the writer in such a way so that directing would be right for me, I don’t know. We’ve had our first meeting on Spider-Man 4 and we’re looking for the writer.”
A vague answer we know but we’re holding out hope as the great man starts the ball rolling on the wallcrawler’s next adventure and ends his time with the series on a high, rather than the disappointing third movie, which lacked the energy of the first two films.
In the meantime, he’s happy wearing his producer hat – he’s currently promoting upcoming vampire flick 30 Days Of Night - and enjoying a hiatus from megaphone wielding. But isn’t he keen to return to his horror roots, particularly with The Evil Dead set to receive the remake treatment through Raimi’s own Ghost House productions?
“At some point. I don’t have a plan to direct a horror film right now. I’m kind of sated in many ways by producing these kinds of films. Ghost House makes nothing but these kinds of supernatural horror films and I’m just very happy trying to give my two bits to the directors and support them. I feel involved and like I’ve got some stake in the picture.”

Comic-Con 2007: Ultimatum Announced

San Diego Comic-Con 2007: Jeph Loeb to Helm Ultimatum and Answer the Ultimate Universe's Biggest Questions
Loeb and Finch redefine the Ultimate Universe in 6 parts
Since it's inception in 2001, Marvel's Ultimate Universe has been a place where some of the House of Idea's oldest characters were revamped and tweaked, breathing new life and establishing a continuity all its own. But what's a Marvel Universe without some shakeups? Worldwide, multimedia hotshot Jeph Loeb (FALLEN SON, WOLVERINE, "Lost," "Heroes") along with fan favorite artist David Finch (NEW AVENGERS, MOON KNIGHT), will be tearing up the Ultimate line with ULTIMATUM, a story that Loeb promises will change everything.
As a follow up to Brian Michael Bendis's ULTIMATE ORIGIN, ULTIMATUM is set to make some shocking changes in the Ultimate status quo. With six issues jumping between ULTIMATE X-MEN and ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR, the series will be jam-packed with universe -uining mayhem. Bendis has said that ORIGIN will reveal secrets about the history of the Ultimate Universe, and Loeb adds that ULTIMATUM will be what comes after those secrets are let out.
"If ORIGIN is the beginning of the Ultimate Universe, then ULTIMATUM would be the end," says Loeb.
Though spinning out of ULTIMATE ORIGIN, another one of Loeb's books is going to be a major impact on the events of ULTIMATUM, and that book would be the much-anticipated ULTIMATES 3. With elements of ORIGIN and ULTIMATES 3 combined, Loeb claims that there is a "flaw in the system" of the Ultimate Universe, and that things will go terribly, terribly wrong.

CCI LIVE: X-MEN: ENDANGERED SPECIES

Fans lined up Sunday morning in San Diego for one of Marvel Comics' final panels of the long Comic-Con Weekend, a focused look at the X-Men. Among the panelists were Jim McCann, Axel Alonso, Ed Brubaker, Mike Carey, Marc Guggenheim, Daniel Way, Peter David, Christopher Yost and CB Cebulski. McAnn began by asking the crowd if they were reading "Endangered Species," which the crowd obviously were, judging from the applause. Ed Brubaker then explained that everything in "Uncanny" is building towards "Messiah CompleX," and indicated that more or less every book int he line is or would be soon.
Peter David then explained that in "X-Factor," the Isolationist, a character first seen in the previous "X-Factor" series drawn by Joe Quesada, comes up with the idea of having mutants declared a legal endangered species with all the protections the law affords such beings. As for Quicksilver coming back, "the answer is yes," David said, adding that he will be having a smackdown with Layla Miller. "You'll never guess who wins."
Christopher Yost and Ed Brubaker briefly discussed "Emperor Vulcan," which follows up ont he characters Brubaker stranded in space in his year-long Shi'ar arc.

CCI: MARVEL STUDIOS – MAKING MARVELOUS MOVIES

For years, comic book fans have always been concerned whenever a movie adaptation of their favorite comic occurs. It has always been risky for comic book companies to hand their properties to a studio, because the studios vision may not align with the comic book company's and the resulting product is…less than stellar.
Well, no more. At least, not for Marvel. In its first official panel at Comic-Con International, Marvel Studios unveiled their two upcoming films. Comic book enthusiasts, you should feel pleased – very pleased.
Marvel Studios began with a presentation on their upcoming "Incredible Hulk" movie. Representing the film were producers Gale Anne Hurd and Avi Arad, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, director Louis Leterrier and actors Liv Tyler and Edward Norton (who are playing Betty Ross and Bruce Banner). Other members of the cast include Tim Roth (the Abomination) and William Hurt (General Ross); however, they were not free to attend the panel.
Production on the film began two weeks ago in Toronto, and Leterrier reported that he had just finished filming at 7:00am this morning before flying out here. The director said he was first introduced to the character through the '70s TV show, and hoped to create a similar feel with the movie.

SDCC 07: The Incredible Hulk Roars

Edward Norton, Director Louis Leterrier and crew reveal a new direction for the green guy
The Marvel Studios Hulk panel began with a definitive statement from Marvel movie guru Kevin Feige: "This is the beginning of a whole new Hulk saga." Gone is the pensive Ang Lee take on the green monster, the new Hulk film, directed by Unleashed helmer Louis Leterrier, will take the character in a brand new direction.
Joining Leterrier on the project is Edward Norton, who wrote the screenplay and will star as Bruce Banner/Hulk in the film. Along with Producers Gale Anne Hurd, Kevin Feige and Avi Arad, Norton was joined at the panel by his co-star on the film, Liv Tyler, who plays Betty Ross.
The panel repeatedly stressed the different direction for this film from the previous one, citing the television show and comics as dual inspirations for the movie, dubbed The Incredible Hulk. At the panel, the first image of the new Hulk was revealed. He is a deep grey/green with a scarred hide and tortured face. As soon as we are able to post a picture, look for it on IGN.
Although the film is in just its second week of production, the cast and crew flew down to Comic-Con after a late night on set to answer questions from the enormous crowd.

SDCC '07: STEVE WACKER NAMES THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN TEAMS

Back in June, Spider-Man Editor Steve Wacker revealed to Newsarama that Amazing Spider-Man would be adopting a "thrice-monthly" shipping schedule later in 2007. The header for this new era of Spider-Man? "Brand New Day."
At that time, he wasn't about to name names of the creators working on the series, saying only, "The new creators have laid out about a year's worth of story arcs for Peter Parker and the cast. Over that, they're coming up with stories that will move the uber-plot along, so that each story has the same writing and art team and no one is left writing Part 3 of some else's story."
Both Marvel and Wacker promised the reveal of the creators later in the year.
Well, later is now. At Saturday's Spider-Man panel, names have been named.
And we spoke with Wacker to guide us through it all.
Newsarama: First up Steve, introduce your teams for us. Who's writing, and who's drawing, and who's paired with whom?
Steve Wacker: Here's our launch teams:
Dan Slott, Steve McNiven, Dexter Vines and Morry Hollowell
Marc Guggenheim, Salvador Larrocca and Jason Keith
Bob Gale, Phil Jimenez, Andy Lanning and Jeromy Cox
Zeb Wells, Chris Bachalo, Tim Townshend and Antonio Fabela
All of it lettered by Virtual Calligraphy's own Cory Petit/ Assistant Edited by Tom Brennan. Executive Edited by Tom Brevoort and screwed up hourly by yours truly. Read Full Article
